What Extrablack is.
MR grade plywood: veneers bonded with a moisture resistant resin, made for interior furniture in rooms that stay dry.
MR grade, the IS 303 family
IS 303 is the Indian standard for plywood for general purposes. It sets two bonding grades — MR, moisture resistant, and BWR, boiling water resistant. Extrablack is sold as the MR of that pair.
Made for the dry rooms
The bond is built to cope with the humidity of an ordinary Indian room and the occasional wipe of a damp cloth. That covers most of the furniture in most houses.
The everyday working grade
This is what a carpenter reaches for when the job is a wardrobe rather than a sink unit. It is the volume grade of the trade, and the one we sell most of.
Kept on the floor
Carried as regular stock rather than ordered in, so a bedroom set does not wait on a supplier’s lorry.
Moisture resistant, not moisture proof.
The two get used as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and the difference is the most useful thing to understand before you buy any plywood at all.

What the R in MR stands for
Resistant. MR plywood is bonded to hold up against the damp in the air and the occasional wipe of a cloth. It is not made to be soaked, and no MR board from any brand is. You will still see MR called moisture proof — in the trade, on packaging, on marketing material. It is the wrong word, and believing it is how a perfectly good sheet ends up in the wrong room.

Where it stops: the sink and the shower
Standing water, a slow leak under a sink, steam that never really clears. That is where MR gives up, and it gives up at the glue line, months after the carpenter has gone. A kitchen carcass and a bathroom vanity are not MR jobs. We will say so at the counter rather than afterwards.

Which is fine, because most of a house is dry
Bedrooms, living rooms, wardrobes, beds, storage, study units, office furniture. Buying boiling water proof plywood for a first-floor wardrobe is money spent against a risk that room does not have.

Spend the difference where the water is
The sensible way to buy plywood for a whole house is to split it: MR for the dry rooms, and a waterproof grade such as Century Sainik 710 for the kitchen and the bathrooms. One grade everywhere is either an overspend or a repair waiting to happen.

Humidity and the odd splash, BWR
Boiling water resistant plywood sits between the two. Worth it for furniture on a ground floor, against an outer wall, or anywhere the rains get into the room.

Water every day, BWP
Kitchen carcasses, under-sink units and bathroom vanities want boiling water proof bonding. That is the Sainik 710 job, and the one place we will talk you up a grade.

Or a board instead of plywood
For shutters and flat work there is a third answer: an engineered board can suit the job better than any plywood grade. Tell us what is being built and we will say so.
