What particle board is.
Wood chips and shavings, graded by size and bonded under heat and pressure into a flat, even panel. It is the board modular furniture is carcassed in, and the reason a wardrobe costs what it does rather than twice that.
The economical carcass board
For shutters, carcassing and dry-area storage, where the board is going to be laminated anyway and never sees water.
Flat, and it stays flat
Graded chips and controlled pressing are what keep a panel from warping once it is cut and stood up.
An even face for laminate
Calibrated to a consistent thickness across the sheet, so laminate pastes down without bubbles along the join.

Why we stock wood, not bagasse.
Bagasse board, pressed from sugarcane residue, gets sold hard on price and on being the greener option. We have looked at it properly, and we stock wood based board instead. Here is the reasoning, so you can weigh it yourself.

The fibre you start with decides the board you end with
Wood chip is long, strong fibre. Sugarcane residue is shorter fibre, and it arrives mixed with pith — the soft, spongy core of the cane, which carries no structural strength and has to be separated out before pressing. Every bagasse board rests on how completely that was done, and you cannot see it from the edge of a stacked sheet. A wood board never has the problem to begin with.

Wood starts near the density the board needs
Bagasse is the much lighter raw material, so more of the finished board’s strength has to be forced into it at the press. Wood chip begins closer to where it has to end up. Less of the result depends on how hard the machinery was working that day.

A crop is seasonal. Timber supply is not.
Bagasse exists only while the sugar mills are crushing. Plantation timber runs all year, and that is what lets a board come out the same in March as it did in October. Consistency between lots is the difference between a material you can specify with confidence and one you have to judge afresh each delivery.

Wood board has the longer record
Wood particle board has been made, tested and argued over industrially for decades, and the furniture trade knows exactly how it behaves after ten years inside a wardrobe in this climate. Bagasse board is newer here. It may well prove itself in time; it has not had the time yet.

And wood is not the unsustainable choice
The strongest argument made for bagasse is that it puts agricultural waste to use. Worth knowing before that settles it for you: Action TESA presses its boards from eucalyptus, a fast growing crop raised in managed plantations rather than timber cut from forest. Choosing wood here is not choosing against the environment.
That is our recommendation as a dealer, not a laboratory verdict — and the board still has to be a good one. Where Action TESA earns its rate is in the plant: glue produced in-house so every lot binds the same, chips graded before pressing for screw holding and flatness, moisture controlled through production, and thickness calibrated across the sheet. If you are weighing a bagasse quotation against ours, ask both sides for the ISI mark and the emission grade.
