What a Sainik Door is.

CenturyPly’s flush door shutter: a solid core faced both sides, bonded so that the layers hold when the door gets wet instead of letting go.

BWP grade, ISI marked

The stamp on the face reads IS 2202 Part 1, the Indian standard for solid core wooden flush door shutters with plywood faces, in BWP — boiling water proof — grade, with the licence number printed beside it.

Built for damp openings

Boiling water proof bonding is what lets a wooden shutter hang in a kitchen or a utility doorway, where an ordinary flush door swells at the bottom edge and the plies start to open.

Termite and borer resistant

CenturyPly treats the door against termite and borer attack, and states a seven year warranty on it. The warranty mark is printed on the face sticker.

The shutter arrives unfinished. The laminate, veneer, polish or paint is your carpenter’s work — and the section below is about getting that part right.

A good flush door usually fails for a reason that has nothing to do with the door. CenturyPly prints the rules on the face of every shutter, in English and Hindi, and almost every warped or split door we hear about broke one of them.

What is printed on the door

Two stickers, side by side on the face. One carries the warranty and the grade. The other is the part everybody peels off without reading.

  • A limit on trimmingCenturyPly allows no more than 12 mm off any one edge. Frames are rarely true, and taking more than that off one side is the commonest way a door is spoiled before it is even hung.
  • Finish both faces, in the same materialOne side laminated and the other left bare pulls the shutter out of true over the following months. See our laminated doors page for why that happens.
  • No grooves cut in the surfaceThe maker allows none at all. A groove routed into the face opens the door to exactly the moisture the bonding is there to keep out.
  • The lock goes where it is markedThere is a lock block inside the shutter and the sticker shows where. Cut somewhere else and the lock is screwed into core, not into timber.

  • Stack them flat until they are fitted

    Horizontal, on a level floor, under cover. Doors left standing on edge against a wall on a site for a fortnight come out of it bowed, and no warranty covers that.

  • Screw into the edges, but pre-drill

    Hinges and fittings are fine anywhere on the edge or the face, as long as the hole is drilled first rather than driven. A screw forced into a flush door splits what it is meant to hold.

  • Breaking the rules takes the warranty with it

    Seven years stands behind a door that was fitted the way the maker says. It is not a lot to ask of a carpenter, and it is worth asking before the work starts rather than after.

  • Scan the code on the face

    Every shutter carries a QR code. Scan it before the door is cut, the same way you would check a sheet of Sainik 710. We would rather you checked at our counter than took our word for it.

We stock both, and the whole range in between, so there is nothing in it for us either way.
